New records set at the amazing race towards the future!
Over 1000 students from across Queensland have braved chilly temperatures and strong winds over the weekend (15-16 September) to pedal for 24 hours in the State’s most gruelling endurance races for teenagers - the state's 24hour Human Powered Vehicle Championships.
The HPV race is the feature event of the RACQ Technology Challenge Maryborough, the state’s largest technology event, where students design, build and race a variety of machines that harness alternative energy.
First across the line were defending champions, St Mary’s Shooting Stars from Maryborough, whose team of eight students completed a record 502 laps of the challenging street circuit – the equivalent of riding from Maryborough to Mackay in 24 hours. Nanango State High’s The Supermen took out second place, while Aldridge High School’s A Team from Maryborough was third and Springwood High School finished in fourth place.
The 10th annual RACQ Technology Challenge Maryborough involved a total of seven events, including four prestigious state titles, with alternative energy challenges to test the innovation of the state’s primary and high school students.
Over the two days around 2000 students from schools as far north as Sarina, south as the Gold Coast and west to Blackwater competed in the various events. They raced pushcarts, solar boats and cars and tiny dragsters powered by carbon dioxide in a series of challenges. They also built and controlled tiny lego robots in a series of dance and rescue challenges.
It’s geared to primary and high school students, with seven events that will challenge your innovation and imagination.
But more than that, you get to camp with your team-mates… Hang out with new friends from all over Queensland… explore your future career in alternative energy, engineering and science… and compete in prestigious Queensland championship events with great prizes!
It started in 2002, and it grows every year! For thousands of students, teachers, parents and spectators, it’s a highlight of the school calendar – why not join in too? Be part of it!
