CO2 Dragsters

What is small, jet-propelled, hand-made and can travel at speeds over 140 km per hour? CO2 dragsters!…

CO2 Dragsters are designed and built by secondary school students, raced on a specially designed track and powered by compressed CO2 (soda) cylinders.

Every year at the Technology Challenge Maryborough, Queensland’s fastest dragster is determined in this statewide championship event! They race over a 20 metre track at lightning-fast speed – blink and you’ll miss them.

There are five divisions:

  • General Shop yr 8 – 12
  • Technology and Engineering Studies yr 9 – 12
  • Specials and Primary Schools
  • Teachers’ open
  • Outlaw Class (students only) OR Cannonball Run

(The outlaw class is all about speed, and nothing else!)

Students who compete learn real-world skills and have stacks of fun. They demonstrate DMA principles to draw, design and then build a dragster within a set of specifications.
