Human powered hat trick for Nanango State High
Nanango State High School’s Slipstreamers took out the first hat-trick in the history of the Technology Challenge Maryborough at the weekend by winning the RACQ 24-hour Human Powered Vehicle race for the third year in succession.
In the dramatic last minutes of the race the crowd surged trackside craning for a view, screaming encouragement as their teams strived to complete as many laps as possible to take out the overall title, win their category or beat their own lap count from last year.
The Slipstreamers team of eight raced 491 laps of the 1.5km circuit – the equivalent of riding from Melbourne to Canberra - winning only two laps ahead of Rough Riders and four ahead of Fast Forward, both from St Mary’s College Maryborough who came in second and third in the Open Boys.
Cool Runnings, also from St Mary’s College won the Open Girls, a massive 96 laps ahead of second placed Move It Or Lose It from Tannum Sands State High and 111 laps ahead of Springwood Wildfire from Springwood State High.
The finish of the annual endurance race capped off a fantastic weekend of competitions that attracted more than 10,000 spectators and 2000 students from throughout the state.
